As a veteran, I know a thing or two about gear that needs to withstand absolute punishment. When it comes to my home gym, I look for that same level of tactical reliability, utility, and over-built construction. The Walrus by Fringe Sport checks every single box and then some.
Right out of the box, you can tell this isn't your average, run-of-the-mill fitness equipment. It has an immediate, heavy-duty presence. The material quality, the reinforcing stitching, and the sheer durability of the design scream premium craftsmanship. Fringe Sport didn't cut corners here; it feels like it was engineered to military-grade standards.
In practice, it performs flawlessly. Whether I’m pushing the intensity or just putting in the daily miles, it handles heavy use without a hint of strain. It gives you the confidence to train hard without worrying about equipment failure—a rare peace of mind in a market flooded with cheap gear.
If you appreciate a solid, no-nonsense piece of strength equipment that is built to outlast you, the Walrus is worth every single penny. Outstanding job, Fringe Sport. Five stars all day long.
**Pros:** Bulletproof construction, exceptional material quality, veteran-level durability, and elite performance.
**Cons:** Absolutely none.
Heavy duty. Smooth and well built. Very happy with purchase. Highly recommend it.
Love this machine and can easily be put together by yourself btw
The Walrus is hands down my favorite piece of equipment I've bought from Fringe Sport. With a 320lbs weight stack, I will never need any more weight since I am a casual gym goer. With the easy installation, adjustable pulley, and a low row pulley, you are set for life!! Highly recommend!
I think the best things about the Walrus are the seat design and overall smoothness of the machine. I've been really enjoying no longer having to sit on the floor to do cable rows! The only small issue I've had is with the attachment carabiners being a little too small, which makes it kinda hard to take attachments on and off. I added a bigger carabiner, which totally fixed this. Other than that, the Walrus has been great maintenance wise and is easily one of my favorite machines!
The Walrus is my first buy from Fringe and it's already one of my favorite home gym items among some other great pieces I have from Rogue and Rep. Deliver, install videos, customer service, and overall quality are all things I've been impressed by. Love the folding seat design which makes the switch from pull to row so quick and makes it possible to do other cable exercises for triceps/biceps. I spent way too much time researching and comparing this machine to all the big brands, so now you don't have to. Buy this. You won't regret it.

A lot of great features but some very frustrating design flaws. No hooks for the lat pulldown. The trolley allows you to over lower and if you do badly scrapes the red rollers because the guard for them is too short when you factor in cable tension pulling them. The poles come unlubed so the weights stick so bad that i could dead hang from the bad at 10 lbs. Bought lithium grease and that fixed the issue. The lat bar also has to be raised to the top before you can low row. The low row likes to come off the red barrings due to tension issues as it relies on the weight of the pullup bar to provide proper tension. So much potential just needs refinements. The walrus 2.0 will be a must buy but I would hold off on this 1.0 editions too many small quirks that can easily be fixed with minor design updates.
Its my favorite piece of equipment....it is a great value proposition. Solid and innovative. I bought the dane as well....the 1:1 was a big selling point...but because I have the walrus...i wish my functional trainer was 2:1....please release a 2:1 kit for it...please!!!!! Id be first to buy it. The walrus takes thec1:1 equation out if the mix for the functional trainer...
The midas add weights are great...but seriously im smaller and there are exercises where 5 lbs starting weight or drop set would be great for . Lbs.
Add weight recommendations....either instruct people to add duct tape on bottoms or sell a laser cut adhesive protective material for bottoms....why....they will scratch your plates badly and or get scratched also the magnets can come out. I added tape..all good now. I have many ideas....ill try to write them all down
The Fringe Walrus lat pulldown and row machine has quickly become a cornerstone of my training routine. Assembly was simple thanks to the company’s clear, step-by-step video walkthrough. There was no guesswork, no frustration, just smooth setup from start to finish. The pulley system is top-tier, rivaling what you'd find in a commercial gym. It glides smoothly under load and feels solid through every rep. The oversized weight stack is amazing. For most lifters, it’s unlikely you’ll ever max it out, which makes it future-proof for progressive overload. This machine has earned a permanent spot in my workout rotation. The overbuilt frame adds to that confidence it was clearly designed to last.
I think the Walrus is near perfect, it's a great value, but it does bind from time to time. With that said, I would recommend it to anyone
I've had the Walrus built for about 2 months now and I'm completely happy with it. It arrived well-packed in a crate. Zero scratches, dents, or damage. Assembly was easy and straightforward following the YouTube video guide. The included written manual is not great and I didn't use it except to check that all parts were present.
I use it alongside a more typical 2to1 2-stack functional trainer and the additional weight, height, and cable length are huge benefits. Everything is extremely smooth. Weight amounts are easy to adjust and I appreciate that I can easily hang small 2.5lb plates on as needed to fine-tune. With the seat in the upper position, the footprint is very compact. I also like the standard 3x3 and 1" hole construction that makes it somewhere I can use for storing attachments. My wife loves the ability to adjust the starting position for her height.
Only cons I can think of are:
- The included lat pulldown bar is pretty poor though I already had an alternative on hand that I use instead. I'd rather just not have one included, or include something that better matches the premium feel of the rest of the machine
- The printed manual is not good - though the excellent YouTube assembly guide more than makes up for it. There should be a QR code to that video in the crate.
We are loving the walrus. I like the size of the weight stack. The pulleys are very smooth. It is built really well. The main benefit was that you can be seated for low row instead of on the floor. The only issue I have seen was that if you move the trolley up and down to position the bar you must make sure the bar is attached or due to slack the cable can jump off the bottom pulleys so if the pulleys captured the cable so they could not come off that would be nice. Also I would love to see a trolley for the front upright as an upgrade that would let you have functional trainer capabilities with the walrus.
The Walrus came in one large wooden box. The box had a few areas where the wood was smashed but everything came unscathed. Assembly was not the easiest. The instructions and video weren't as clear as I wish they were, but I got it together without too much frustration. The lower cable gave me some trouble. It runs through the supports and I found it difficult to fish it around the lower pully. I will still play with the cables to figure out the best tension for me. I feel that after a couple of months, Fringe will put out a revised video that will clear things up. I wish that the lower cable was pre-installed.
The Walrus deserves 5 stars . It's heavy duty, works well and is constructed using excellent materials. After looking at competing machines, the Walrus is a great deal. There are a couple of small issues putting this thing together. I attribute these to the machine being brand new. Bottom line, I'm happy with my purchase.
The Walrus is a heavy duty piece of gym kit! I was debating getting a separate lat pull and low row station so that I don’t have to sit on the ground such as the budget friendly York offerings. The flip down seat is obviously the major selling point of this machine for me as it doesn’t make you compromise one station over the other and the other. If you are use to a commercial gym this machine absolutely matches the smoothness of those and I believe the pulling weight is more accurate since I can do slightly less on the Walrus. The steel is true 11-gauge with no issues, but there was a few signs of marring on the paint since it isn’t shipped in great packaging. Also the lat bar that comes with it is nice in my opinion since I didn’t have one and typically use MAG grips.
Now onto the biggest gripe, the cable retention and durability. If you do not have a heavy enough pull down bar up top the cable will sag and come undone at the bottom of the unit. If you don’t catch it before you row the cable may be off the rollers which could shred the coating on that heavy duty steel. Happened once to me and honestly a separate piece of metal channel or a guide that you can remove for maintenance would seem to prevent this. Hopefully there’s a fix or retrofit for it down the line as I believe the very similar machine from ATX doesn’t do this. The odd part is that my cable may be faulty since I noticed the cable up over the top pulley right by where you attach handles to is starting to look chewed up despite it not having any interference issues unlike the bottom issues.
Other than that it was a must buy for a guy whose favorite day is back day. The gripes are offset by the fact that it costs $1,000 less than the next machine that is similar!
I recently purchased the Fringe Sport Walrus and wanted to share my experience so far:
Shipping & Packaging
The product arrived pretty beat up. The crate had parts scattered everywhere, and there were quite a few minor scuffs on the components. Nothing was functionally damaged, but I was a little disappointed with the overall packaging and condition upon arrival.
Installation & Setup
Installation was relatively straightforward overall, but the instructions and the YouTube video left out a few key steps. I had to spend some extra time figuring things out, which was a bit frustrating. That said, Fringe Sport’s customer support was very helpful when I reached out, and they quickly clarified what I needed.
Cable System Performance
This is where my experience has been mixed. The cable system works fine, but it isn’t as smooth as I expected—especially when working with lighter weights. I previously had the Bells of Steel system, which was noticeably smoother in comparison.
One thing worth noting is that the cable can have some slack if there are no attachments to hold it in place. It hasn’t caused any problems yet, but I have concerns about this.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the Walrus is a solid piece of equipment once it’s set up, but the experience hasn’t been flawless. The scuffed parts, missing instruction details, and slightly less-smooth cable system were disappointing at this price point. However, the build quality feels good, customer support was responsive, and I’m confident it’ll hold up well long-term.
The Walrus is a standalone lat pulldown and seated low row machine in one tower. You get a full-height pulldown station and a dedicated low row, both running off a selectorized weight stack, so changing weight is a pin move instead of a plate change. It's built for lifters who treat back training as a main lift and don't want their power rack tied up every time they do cable work.
Who should skip it: if you don't own a rack, bar and plates yet, buy those first. If you train alone and only do cable work at the end of sessions, a rack-mounted pulley like the Sidewing is the cheaper route. Our guide Lat Pulldown Machine vs. Rack Attachment walks through the decision, with a free planner.
Measure your ceiling at the exact spot the tower will stand (garage door tracks hang lower than the ceiling), and leave a clear lane in front for your legs on the low row. Email us for assembled dimensions before ordering and we'll check the fit with you.
Is a lat pulldown machine worth it for a home gym? Yes if you train back often, share your gym, or want fast weight changes. If you train alone on a budget, a rack pulley covers the same movements for less.
Can I do both pulldowns and rows? Yes. The Walrus has a full-height pulldown and a dedicated seated low row.
Do I need to bolt it down? Email us before ordering and we'll confirm install requirements for your space.
